The Benefits of Self Massage

How many times have we said to ourselves, “Ugh, I could sure use a massage after a day like today”? Most days? Every day? Even if we're not stressing throughout the day, a quick daily massage is something we could all benefit from in more ways that one.

Of course there are several different types of massage, and most consider it a treat to go to a spa and pay a professional, but what we’re recommending here is self massage! Did you know that self massage can increase your self esteem, improve your skin texture and boost your immune system? Here are some of the other great benefits of self massage:

  • Hydrates the body and reduces signs of aging
  • Gives you a more firm and toned appearance
  • Improves circulation
  • Lubricates your joints and can increase flexibility
  • Loosens the toxins in your body
  • Speeds up recovery time
  • Increases endorphins
  • Relaxes and calms the mind
  • Promotes a deeper sleep

Your daily routines for getting up in the morning and before going to sleep are how you show yourself love and attention. Giving yourself 5 minutes of “me time” as often as possible can drastically improve your mindset over time. Give it a try!

Here’s how to execute a proper self massage:

  1. Grab your oil of choice. You can use any carrier oil (add some drops of essential oils if you’d like) or you can choose from one of our massage oils below
  2. Warm it up if you wish. You can do this by holding the bottle under hot running water for a bit until it is warm (not hot!)
  3. Start by dipping your fingertips into the oil and rubbing into your scalp in circular motions
  4. Then apply to your limbs - begin at the furthest point (your wrists and ankles) and massage the oils towards your heart. This will encourage proper blood flow throughout your body.
  5. Apply to your chest, abdomen, shoulders and lower back in circular motions
  6. Finish with a medium to firm pressure massage for your feet

After your massage, you can relax for 10-15 minutes and then hop in the shower or a hot bath. The heat will help the oils absorb and hydrate your skin. Or you may get dressed in loose clothing and and go straight to bed for a restful sleep.
